Being Vegetarian in Croatia

Being veggie in Croatia used to be a bit of a bummer but not anymore.  Gone are the days when a restaurant would only offer a vegetable plate of grilled vegetables.  Croatian cuisine has really upped its game to accommodate veggies and vegans alike.  Most restaurants will make up dishes if you ask them and many have dishes like vegetable risotto, mushroom carbonara, vegan spaghetti bolognese, yummy veggie pizzas, cheese dishes and mouth watering salads.

A couple of restaurants that we recommend on Ciovo are Leonardos, Sr Dela and Villa Katarina - click on each one for website or location or more information on TripAdvisor.

In Trogir we would recommend Restaurant Pasike for lunch and dinner and Caffe Bar Bella for ice cream, all have tasty vegan options.

Cost of Living in Croatia

One big factor that influences where you might go on holiday is the cost of living.  In this post I will give an insight into food, drink and transport prices in Split, Croatia.  Overall Croatia has approximately a 35% lower cost of living in comparison to the Ireland and the UK.  When it comes to transport you can expect to pay similar prices for taxis though, buses and taxis boats are inexpensive and offer great value for money when travelling around this beautiful country.  Below see a number of priced items that we think will help you gauge how much spending money to bring with you.  These are prices we usually pay for items in Split (Ciovo, Trogir etc).  These prices are approximate and act as a guideline.

The Blue Cave, Vis Island, Croatia

We have been visiting Croatia since 2003 and we’ve always talked about visiting the Blue Cave.  We recently got around to taking a trip and boy it didn’t disappoint.  We decided to pick up tickets when we got to Vis, one they were cheaper and two we didn’t have to pick a time and stick to it.  At the harbour in Vis you will be able to buy tickets for the taxi boat (speed boat) to the cave where you take a smaller boat to go into the blue cave.  Even though we went in September it was still very busy with boats queuing up to get in.  You don’t stay very long in the cave but just enough time to take in it’s beauty.  We highly recommend this trip and feel it is a MUST SEE spot when you visit this beautiful country.  Price worked out at about €20 per person in total for return speed boat as well as boat and entry to the cave.
